Lucy is the mission to explore the Jupiter Trojan asteroid an ancient population of asteroid ‘fossils’ that orbit around Jupiter. To reach these distant asteroids, the Lucy spacecraft’s trajectory includes three Earth gravity assists to boost it on its journey to these enigmatic asteroids.
While it’s journey to the Trojan asteroids that share Jupiter’s orbit with sun, NASA’s Lucy captured this interesting image of earth about 620,000 from Earth. This spacecraft was named the 3.2 million-year-old fossil of a human ancestor discovered in Hadar, Ethiopia.
Lucy was launched on 26 October 2021, from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida using an Atlas V 401 rocket. Marina Koren, a staff writer covering space at The Atlantic, had trouble spotting it . “Every time I think I see it, I end up wiping another dust particle from my screen. Where is it??” she wrote on Twitter.
